Fiji enjoys five distinct island races of this parrot species. This image is the Kadavu race. The Kadavu (splendens) is bright red with the broad blue collar.
A versatile parrot that frequents habits from mangrove to wet mountain forests, it lives in large groups and is very noisy and sociable. They eat a variety of soft & hard fruits, seeds and caterpillars. A popular cage bird, there is an illegal traffic in these species. They are known as the Shining Parrots and highly prized in aviculture.
They average 45cm in size and normally nest between June and October. The nest boxes we provide resemble the kind of cavity they would select in the wild. They lay 2 or 3 off-white eggs. Depending on the time of day you visit the park, you may be able to see, from the debris on the floor of their enclosure, just what messy eaters they are!
